GTIN
The Global Trade Item Number is the globally unique article number under GS1. It is printed as the barcode on the pack and identifies a product at one particular packaging level.
What it means
A GTIN has 8, 12, 13 or 14 digits and is issued by GS1. It belongs to a product at exactly one packaging level: the single unit, the case and the pallet each carry their own number. If the product changes materially, in content or pack size for instance, it receives a new GTIN.
For medical devices the GTIN is often also the device part of the UDI, the unique device identification under the MDR.
Why it matters in procurement
In healthcare facilities, articles often exist under several names and numbers: the manufacturer calls the product one thing, the distributor another, the ERP a third. The GTIN is the one number everybody means. With it, duplicates are recognised reliably, prices refer to the same unit and orders go out without queries.
How SANOVIO works with it
SANOVIO enriches the article master with the GTIN for every packaging level. Each article becomes unambiguous, quantities and prices refer to the same unit, and the quality of the master data rises markedly.
